Frequently Asked Questions

How does UndoIT 2.0 work?

UndoIT 2.0 archives the actions of many common AS/400 commands. It is important to note that UndoIT 2.0 requires NO SPECIAL COMMANDS. Archiving is instantaneous and transparent. Any authorized user can simply type "UNDO" on the command line and choose which previously authorized commands to undo.

When a command is archived, a "snapshot" is taken of the object and/or object attributes. This "snapshot" is stored in the UndoIT archive library for later research and retrieval. This library is automatically purged based on preset criteria by the administrator.

What is a Snapshot?

An object (file, program, data area, job description, etc.) and/or its attributes are captured prior to the execution of certain commands and stored in the archives for later research and retrieval. This occurs in real time, instantly and transparently to the user.

How is a company vulnerable? Shouldn't backups be good enough?

Every iSeries (AS/400) has a “Window of Vulnerability”. The Window of Vulnerability exists between the last backup and the next backup (usually nightly). How is a company vulnerable during this time period? Any changes to objects during this “Window” isn’t archived. File journalling doesn’t address this issue, it only archives file data, not objects and object attributes. Mirroring technology doesn’t address this issue. High-availability systems doesn’t address this issue.

A company is vulnerable in 3 distinct ways: Time, Money, Resources

  • Time
Researching problems takes time. Usually the most critical research takes place when time is most limited.
  • Money
Time is money. When employees and contractors spend valuable time researching problems that occur during this window of vulnerability, it costs your company money.
  • Resources
When an employee is wasting time researching and correcting problems, they are not working on their regularly assigned tasks.
How are the archives removed from the AS/400?

UndoIT 2.0 has a processor job that is run in the background throughout the day. When idle for a particular time (set by the System Administrator) this process will kick off another job which removes any archives whose time retention has expired. This is completely transparent to the user and requires no manual intervention.
